The Center for Strategic Research "North-West", the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations and the Russian Science Foundation have jointly launched a long-term cooperation project on forecasting the development of science topics.

The aim of the project is to identify the most promising areas of research today and science topics to invest in right now to ensure maximum effect.
The following directions have been selected as the pilot areas for foresight research:

• biomedicine;

• nutritional science;

• fight against infectious diseases

The work is based on the Disruptive Foresight method developed by the CSR "North-West". The report covers the period from 2016 to 2040. The project included round tables, questionnaires and foresight sessions with experts from different relevant fields. Leading researchers who took part in the events identified the challenges, megatrends and breakthroughs that set the foundation for the approach. The advantage of the approach is openness and priority of a dialogue.

The project is carried out within the framework of the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of Russia until 2035, approved by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 642 of December 1, 2016 (hereinafter referred to as SSTD) and recognizes the importance of challenges as the basis for decision-making and formation of priorities in science. Also, the selected research areas are in conformity with aims set out in SSTD.
