The CSR “North-West” Foundation took part in establishment and development of the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (IAMT)in Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPBSTU). The Institute is one of the strategic initiatives within the framework of the “5-100” program.
Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPBSTU) is one of the participants of the “5-100” program launched to improve competitiveness of leading Russian universities and bring at least five universities from among the project participants into the top 100 of global education rankings. Participating universities develop their own competitiveness improvement programs that define models for further development of the university. SPbPU focuses on the model of building a system of local "Greenfield" in the global "Brownfield", which involves creation of fundamentally new structures in the conditions of the established traditional university, which leads to achieving breakthrough success and maintaining key advantages.
The Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (IAMT) in Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPBSTU) is being established and developed within the framework of this model. The CSR “North-West” Foundation has contributed to design of the IAMT as part of the project for provision of the analytical and administrative support for SpbPU activities within the framework of the “5-100” program.
A key feature of the new institute is its focus on modern global trends in industrial production (initiatives Industry 4.0, Factory of the Future) and on fast growing sectors like
- computer modelling;
- biologically based design and other latest achievements in the field of volumetric functional design;
- Industrial Internet as the basis for digital production;
- new materials
- economics and management of modern manufacturing enterprises (smart, virtual & digital factories )
The planning sessions and project workshops organized by the Center for Strategic Research "North-West", research and analytical work conducted by the CSR experts, resulted in preparation of the concept of the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (IAMT)in Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPBSTU). The concept sets out the guiding principles of IAMT activities in the spheres of education, research and project activities, cooperation with industrial and science and technology partners, international cooperation, marketing strategy, special environment and corporate culture, business model and organizational model.
IAMT is a new type of educational institutions offering master’s degree, where training is conducted by teaching practitioners carrying out projects for high-tech industry. Within the framework of the project an extensive partner network, composed of internal SPbPU institutions (for the exchange of competences) and external organizations that can act as both customers and co-executors, has been created. Close cooperation with advanced manufacturing companies will facilitate IAMT’s movement towards technology frontier and will contribute to successful solution of tasks relevant to Russia’s economic agenda.
IAMT students will participate in real projects under the guidance of teachers-tutors and attend classes conducted by visiting foreign celebrities. Practice-oriented training will make it possible to train skilled professionals for modern global and Russian industry.
To keep the agenda current it was suggested to involve representatives of high-tech industrial enterprises and government agencies in management of the IAMT.
Successful implementation of the developed concept will make it possible to launch the activity of the new for Russia type of educational institution, training experts demanded by modern economy and contributing to solution of such problems as import substitution and proactive import substitution.
